Press Release Summary: Spam technologies in comparison: Content-Scan vs. checksum algorithm. What is the difference?
Press Release Body: Email communication is a process of SMTP servers exchanging simple greeting commands and after the "friendly talk" the message content is delivered to the appropriate server. Spam filtering can be done both at this SMTP server communication process and at the actual message content level.
Content can be scanned using statistical systems based on prelearned databases of spam and not-spam messages. Furthermore checksums of spam messages are often stored in a large database to avoid copies of spam messages already detected to be delivered to the recipient. Since spammers keep randomly changing their messages, checksum filters are only effective when the spam messages are similar and hence the spammer has to spend more effort on his sending system to avoid such filtering. Statistical systems however can make much more advanced predictions about the classification of an email even if the message has never been seen before. Generally it is not sufficient to use a single method; combining different filtering methods available results in increased performance.
